Allotments

The Parish Council has made available two sets of allotments:

Forest Fold

The Allotment Site at Forest Fold will soon be celebrating its 40 year anniversary. Shevington Parish Council consider the Forest Fold Allotments an important asset to the Community and the environment.

The Allotments enable Tenants to produce an abundance of nutritious and low cost food, whilst enjoying recreational activities, healthy exercise and social contacts. There is also the fun and challenges of growing a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers.

The PC is assisted in the management of the site by the Forest Fold Tenants’ Association (FFTA) Committee which was formed in 2020. The Committee comprises 6 tenants who are elected yearly, and 1 member who is co-opted onto the Committee. The Committee meets monthly and holds an Annual General Meeting.

he Forest Fold Tenants’ Association has developed a very good community spirit and the establishment of its own Facebook page has helped bring Tenants together with the added benefits of a Swap Table where Tenants can share and swap spare produce, plants, seeds and recyclable items. In addition to this the Forest Fold Site has also donated plants to both Shevington High School Sensory Garden and Shevington Vale Primary School Eco Friendly Garden.

PLOTS

The site consists of 44 allotment plots. The allotment plots range in size from just over 100 square metres to over 450 square metres.

RAISED BED PROVISION

There are 12 raised bed plots which are available for less abled people and form part of the Forest Fold Allotment Site. These are situated in a separate fenced and gated area near the Bowling Green Car Park and adjacent to the Edible Appley Bridge beds. Each raised bed allocation consists of 2 beds, raised to approximately waist height, 1.2m wide and 4.8m long; these currently cost a token £5 annual rent. Arrangements can be made for 1 bed to be rented (rents pro rata). Raised bed plot holders have access to water via a hosepipe and a shared storage shed.

There is a waiting list for Allotment plots for residents residing within the Parish of Shevington and the Waiting List Officer can be contacted via the Clerk to the Parish Council.

Vicarage Lane

The Parish Council owns land at Vicarage Lane; the land is leased to the Vicarage Lane Allotment Society.

2. There are three sizes of allotments: nos 1-50 are 125sq metres, 51-56 are 13.5sq metres, and there are 12 raised bed allotments.

3. Facilities – the allotments are on a gated and fenced plot of land that has footpath and public footpath around its perimeter. The allotments are serviced by metered water that is turned off during the winter months. There is a gravel road running through the allotments which facilitates vehicular access for allotment holders and service vehicles. Currently there are no toilet facilities available. A skip is provided once a year for rubbish.

4. The allotments have an elected committee which maintains oversight and provides leadership and governs the tenancy agreement. The tenancy agreement is in line with the Allotment Act 1908 in its principles. Applications for a plot will be considered from outside the Parish; however priority would be given to people who live within the Parish.

Additional costs are £30 for a deposit which can be recovered if the plot is handed back in good condition; there is also an administration fee of £10. The keeping of 6 chickens costs an additional £12.50 per year. Our fiscal year runs April to March.
